Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. commercialized Ni-MLCCs in 1982, and became the world’s leading manufacturer. Innovations in capacitance enhancement, product miniaturization, and cost reduction, helped the annual worldwide production of Ni-MLCCs reach the level of 3 trillion. Ni-MLCCs' usefulness in computer/communication devices, industrial/medical equipment, and home appliances made Ni-MLCC vital elements in electronics components.

The wording of the citation is accurate enough to know the milestone.

2) Is the evidence presented in the proposal of sufficient substance and accuracy to support the Citation?

The written evidence is enough to represent the sufficient substance and accuracy.

3) Does the proposed milestone represent a significant technical achievement?

Yes, the contents definitely represent the significant achievement.

In every section, the wording explains the contents of the milestone and it is easy understandable.

Just a few minor grammatical suggestions for the citation as it stands -

"Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. commercialized Ni-MLCCs in 1982, and became the world’s leading manufacturer." - remove the comma after "1982"

"Innovations in capacitance enhancement, product miniaturization, and cost reduction, helped the annual worldwide production of Ni-MLCCs reach the level of 3 trillion." - remove the comma after "reduction"

Thanks for this interesting proposal. However, I hereby propose a new citation which addresses these 4 issues: (1) there are 2 instances that could prevent it from reading correctly in the future ("became the world’s leading manufacturer" might not remain accurate forever, and "annual worldwide production ... 3 trillion" should be better said as having reached a certain level at a point in time), (2) the three terms in the last sentence that are quite lengthy because of the "/" could pose a problem re: keeping the space between words uniform throughout the citation as it would appear on the plaque, (3) the Ni-MLCC acronym is never explicitly defined in the citation itself, and (4) this acronym did not need to appear in each sentence. My proposed new citation needs a year when production exceeded one trillion (I have it as XXXX) to make it always read correctly in the future, and this year should be added to the years associated with the title ("1982-XXXX"). As such, here is my suggested revised citation, which increases the word count from 53 to 60:

After it first commercialized Nickel Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors in 1982, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. became a major Ni-MLCC manufacturer. Innovations in capacitance enhancement, product miniaturization, and cost reduction helped annual worldwide production exceed one trillion units by XXXX. Ni-MLCC thus became a key enabler of the electronic components used in computer and communication devices for industrial, medical, and consumer applications.

We do not need the company name. Using it excludes contributions made or being made by others. We do not need the date when 1 trillion units was reached since we are celebrating the origin story. I suggest:

Production of Nickel Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors became commercialized in 1982. Further innovations in capacitance enhancement, product miniaturization, and cost reduction helped annual worldwide production exceed one trillion units. Ni-MLCC capacitors became a key enabler of the electronic components used in computer and communication devices for industrial, medical, and consumer applications.

Thanks for your comments, Dave. However, I feel that including the year when the one trillion units point was reached is needed since otherwise this very interesting achievement leaves the reader truly wondering when that happened. The proposer should be able to provide this, and including this date is actually required by the newly-clarified rules related to the use of dates in a citation.

I'm okay with that second sentence in Brian's proposed version, but would recommend changes in sentences 1 and 3, as follows:

Sentence 1: "After it first commercialized Nickel Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors in 1982, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. became a major Ni-MLCC manufacturer."

I think we can tighten this up: "Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. commercialized Nickel Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors in 1982, then became a major Ni-MLCC manufacturer." [reads better starting the citation with a noun, rather than a phrase; don't need "first" in there, since that is implied]

Sentence 3 : "Ni-MLCC thus became a key enabler of the electronic components used in computer and communication devices for industrial, medical, and consumer applications."

"key enabler" sounds like psychology-speak and seems vague/unclear to non-experts. Could I recommend something more straightforward?: "Ni-MLCC advanced uses of electronic components in computer and communication devices for industrial, medical, and consumer applications."

Remove the comma after reduction. and supply a year for either one trillion or three trillion units in both the citation and title.
