THIS IS SAMPLE TEXT FOR A COVER LETTER OR EMAIL TO A SITE OWNER TO REQUEST SITE OWNER PERMISSION LETTER TO INSTALL AN IEEE MILESTONE PLAQUE.

Dear [Site Owner]

I am writing to you on behalf of [insert IEEE organizational unit sponsoring the milestone proposal] in hopes that you will be willing to give the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) permission to install a bronze plaque on your property at [give details of address] honoring the [Title of Milestone achievement].

[Give brief paragraph about the achievement being proposed, its significance, etc. This can usually be cut and pasted from the Milestone proposal itself]

The IEEE Milestones Program recognizes significant technical achievements in the fields of electrical and computing technologies. There is no cost to the property holder; all expenses involved in manufacture and installation of the plaque and any dedication ceremony, are borne by IEEE.

The plaques are bronze, 45cm x 30cm x 1.43 cm [18" x 12" x 11/16ths"], and weigh about 8.4 kg [21 lbs]. For photographs of some Milestone plaque installations, you can go to the bottom of the page at this link: http://ieeemilestones.ethw.org/Helpful_Hints_on_Citations,_Plaque_Locations .

To date, more than 190 such IEEE Milestones have been dedicated in locations around the world. (http://ethw.org/Milestones:List_of_Milestones) Some of the achievements already recognized are: Volta's Battery, Transistor, Maxwell's Equations, Practical Electric Telegraph, Discovery of Superconductivity, TELSTAR, ENIAC, First Working Laser, Tokaido Shinkansen Bullet Train, MRI, and others.

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization with 417,000 members; it reaches the global community through publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational conferences.

We hope that these conditions are acceptable to you, and that you will forward your letter of permission to the IEEE History Center Milestone Administrator, Robert Colburn.
