IEEE Milestone Proposal and the 2016 Shannon Centenary -- Gwornell (talk) 13:47, 14 September 2015 (CDT)

Note from the Nominators/Proposers:

2016 is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Claude Shannon, and as a result there will be many events celebrating his achievements during the year. It is for this reason that the IEEE Information Theory Society has chosen to pursue an IEEE Milestone for the Development of Information Theory at this moment in time, so that it might be able to hold the dedication in this special centenary year.

I believe that the proposers/nominators of Development of Information Theory, 1939-1967 to be an IEEE Milestone is recognition of the genius of Claude Shannon who discerned and developed the mathematical constructs of information theory which are the foundation of today's globally pervasive communication systems. They present an easily read and compelling case for this award, backed up by a rather comprehensive collection of references. It is a pleasure for me to endorse this proposal to the IEEE History Committee for its consideration of this proposal.
