|plaque citation=The world's first 'electrically-assisted bike' was commercialized in 1993 by YAMAHA MOTOR Co. Ltd. in Japan. To drive this bike, the rider had to pedal it, but could switch on battery-powered assistance to reduce the effort required. Although this type of bike varied in design detail, assistance cut out when the rider stopped pedalling or when the bike exceeded specified speed thresholds set out by legislation.
